Why Education is Important in Chiropractic Care

The first duties of the physician is to educate the masses not to take medicine.”

-William Osler

I believe it’s the responsibility of every physician to educate their patients. The word “doctor” means to teach. As doctors, it’s irresponsible only to diagnose and treat “conditions.” We need to inform patients of what’s in their best interest regarding their health; whether it’s something we can provide them or not. Any doctor can help a patient get over a cold, but helping them prevent future colds is providing excellent service to those they serve.

The medical system is crowded with very ill patients. Those who are uninformed about healthy choices are missing opportunities to improve their health and quality of life, and are spending thousands of dollars trying to fix problems instead of ever getting healthier.

Although traditional chiropractic care is to manipulate the spine and free up nerve irritation affecting the body — to only adjust the spine would be incomplete and not take into account how other parts of your body contribute to the overall health of the body. As a chiropractic physician, I may not be able to do stretches, exercises, or eat nourishing foods for a patient, but I can at least give recommendations and guide them towards a healthier body and mind.

Every patient has to make the important final decisions on how they want to take care of their bodies, but the more information I can give and the more I can guide patients towards healthy decisions — the better I feel about the services I provide, and the more informed my patients are. I didn’t become a chiropractor to help someone feel better for a day; I do this because I want to see people get and stay well for the rest of their lives.

Staying WellRemindersThe body requires movement to be healthy. Without movement, we lose muscle and agility. Before long, our body starts to take an unpleasant shape.

Benefits from exercise, stretching and other healthy habits deteriorate quickly when we don’t stay active. This causes an increase in stress on the body and has a direct impact on how we feel.

When we don’t feel well, it affects our energy, mood, work and personal life.

Exercise, even light aerobic movement like walking, can improve your health, tone your body, alleviate stress and improve your mood.

In addition to staying active, here are several steps to take and tips to stay healthy and feel better:

  • Be conscious of your posture
  • Stretch and get up for a short walk to break up long periods of sitting
  • Avoid smoking
  • Stay hydrated with non caffeinated drinks
  • Monitor your diet:
    • Avoid loading up on simple carbohydrates or salt laden food.
    • Choose foods in their natural state like fruits, vegetables or nuts and seeds.
    • Lean protein is also a good option to maintain energy and avoid cravings.

Making a positive change doesn’t have to be drastic. Try adding small and sustainable changes to your diet or routine each week to improve wellness. This week, track your posture throughout the day. Next week, every time you remember to sit up straight or correct your posture, try doing a quick stretch.
